When
restoring a database, you can deactivate indices during the process. This option
is useful when the database backup was made from a corrupted database with
duplicate values in unique indices. There are several reasons for a database to
be corrupted, experts from the IBSurgeon company can describe them in
more details. Anyway, it is impossible to restore such a database without
turning indices off. But when you have restored your database and deleted
duplicate records, it is still impossible to use your database. All indices
including primary keys, foreign keys and unique constraints are turned off.
Manual index activation is quite a complicated task that requires deep knowledge
of the system table structure. InterBase/Firebird Development Studio has a
special feature to help you activate all indices in the database. Click the
“Database” menu and select “Activate ALL indices”. Just click the “Start” button
if you need to activate all indices. You can use the opposite feature
“Deactivate ALL indices” when you need to deactivate several indices to check
database performance with and without the selected indices.
